Caprese Michelangelo is a small village in the province of Arezzo. And whose claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of famed artist, Michelangelo Buonarrotti.

The village is situated on a hill dominating the river Singerna, which is a tributary of Tevere, and it keeps with pride all the memories of Michelangelo Buonarroti, who was born here on the 6th of March 1475. In the past century a document was found which belonged to the father of Michelangelo, Ludovico, who was Chief magistrate of Caprese and Chiusi della Verna, and thanks to this document it has been possible to know, with certainty, the birth place of Michelangelo. In 1912 the name of Michelangelo was added to the name of the village, and so it has become Caprese Michelangelo, and besides the coat of arm of the village, represented by a silver ram with an oak, also the symbol of Buonarroti family has been added which is represented by two golden bands on a blue background. Documents, memories of Michelangelo, reproductions and casts of his masterpieces are kept in the Palazzo del Podestà and in the castle, which also shows a collection of modern sculptors. It is worthy to visit the small church of San Giovanni Battista. The monument dedicated to Michelangelo, positioned in front of the Casa del Podestà, was made by the Florentine sculptor Arnaldo Zocchi (1911).

Curiosities and excursions
It is possible to reach Caprese Michelangelo from Pieve Santo Stefano, about 10 kms. There are some other roads that link Caprese to Anghiari and to Chiusi della Verna. Some trekking routes cross the village, such as the Valtiberina trekking and the GEA; the latter leaves, in this part, the watershed between Tirreno and Adriatico and it crosses the river Tevere in Pieve Santo Stefano in order to reach Caprese Michelangelo, then goes up to the Eremo della Casella (Hermitage of Casella), 1263 metres above the sea level, goes through the Alpe di Catenaia and finally reaches La Verna.
